Hi! I'm Julie Barnett, the author of the children's book, Sarsaparilla Sue and the Sassmouth.  As a children's librarian and former language arts teacher, I've had the great fortune to be surrounded by wonderful stories every day. It's time for me to add my own story to the shelf. Working with the talented artist, Jessie Starbuck, I'm thrilled to present our creative work to the world!

With the incredible support of many funders, my Indiegogo Campaign was an outstanding success. Check out the results of my campaign at http://igg.me/at/sassmouth/x/5433111!

Sarsaparilla Sue and the Sassmouth is the humorous story of a girl whose world is turned upside down when the one and only Sassmouth takes up residence in her pocket, encouraging her to use her sass mouth often. Thwarting the Sassmouth is an eye-opening experience for Sarsaparilla, who finds herself in one predicament after another. Will she defeat the sneaky Sassmouth and eliminate her out-of-control sass mouth?  Only Sarsaparilla’s scientific investigation and determination will guide her to the last stand. It’s Sarsaparilla versus the Sassmouth. Who will win?

Book excerpt:

“Are you talking...to me?” Sarsaparilla uttered.

“Of course I’m talking to you! Now, get a move on! We have more sass to spread...more snarky remarks to make! You’re making me proud, kid, real proud. We can’t stop now!”

“What are you talking about? Sass to spread?” Sarsaparilla realized what the “nudge” was that she felt earlier. It was her scientific mind trying to make sense of the new stimulus in her environment.

“Wait a minute. You’re talking about sass, and my sass mouth has been out of control all day.  Who are you?”

“Sassmouth, at your service. Now, stop your belly-aching, and put me back in your pocket. We haven’t sassed nearly enough people today! Give me an ‘S!’ Give me an ‘A!’ Give me an ‘S-S!’ What does it spell? Sass! One more time! Sass!”

“Sassmouth? That’s your name?”

“You betcha! The original Sassmouth, Pioneer of Sass and Talking Back. Look, girly, I’ve helped many children learn to be sass mouth Superstars, and now it’s your turn.  The joy I get from mentoring another sass mouth amateur is almost as wonderful as finding the perfect red lipstick.  Now let’s get back to our lessons,” suggested the Sassmouth as she bared her dazzling pearly whites.
